A Motion Monograph, London, 1963, 102 pages.

Essentially an issue of Motion magazine given over to Durgnat's catalog of New Wave directors. The publication can also be found without its dustjacket, which can lead to confusion about editions.








Greta Garbo

Studio Vista/Dutton Pictureback, New York, 1965, reprinted 1967, 1970, 160 pages.

A survey of the actress's career, with copious photos from the John Kobal collection.









Eros in the Cinema

Calder and Boyars, London, 1966, 207 pages.

Durgnat's famous treatise on sex in the cinema. Much of the material is reprinted from Films and Filming. A a more detailed account of the content's sources is forthcoming.

One of two solo books that Raymond Durgnat did for Ian Cameron's Movie series. The book follows the director's career up through Les Rideaux Blancs.









Luis Bunuel

The second of Durgnat's solo books in Ian Cameron's Movie series. The book follows the director's career up through Belle de jour. It was revised and reprinted in 1977.

Penguin, Baltimore, 1969, 384 pages.

An anthology edited by Michael Horovitz. Raymond Durgnat's poem, "Scrap Iron," appears on page 62.








Samuel Fuller

Edinburgh Film Festival, Edinburgh, 1969, 128 pages.

Published as a companion to the Fuller retrospective and edited by David Will, with a design that borrows from Ian Cameron's Movie books, the volume features 14 contributors. Durgnat's essay, "China Gate," appears on pages 49 - 54.








The Films of Robert Bresson

Praeger, New York, 1969, 144 pages.

Raymond Durgnat is one of seven contributors to this anthology edited by Ian Cameron of Movie magazine. The book follows Bresson's career up only through Une femme douce.

This revised and expanded edition includes four new essays, through The Phantom of Liberty. In comparison, note the series of essays Durgnat wrote for Film Comment on late Bunuel.









Powell, Pressburger and Others

Published in conjunction with a retrospective of the filmmakers' works, this book by edited by Ian Christie features the work of five writers, including Durgnat's essays, "Durgnat on Powell and Pressburger" on pages 65 - 74, which reprints material, and "On The Small Back Room" on pages 74 - 78, written especially for the book. Much of the material is reprinted from Films and Filming. A a more detailed account of the content's sources is forthcoming.









King Vidor, American

Written with Scott Simmon, this is an expanded version of a book length two-part essay in Film Comment. A more detailed account of the content's sources is forthcoming.









WR: Mysteries of the Organism

Durgnat's next to last book while he was alive, this volume is something of a triumph for the BFI, which Durgnat resisted for many years. As published the book reveals no particular woes owing to the unusually constricting nature of the Modern Classics format. But, see the next volume.









A Long Hard Look at Psycho

BFI Publishing, distributed by The University of California Press, Berkeley, 2002, 248 pages, ISBN 0 85170 920 6.

Durgnat's last book while he was alive, this was apparently intended to be his contribution to the BFI Classics series. But the subject proved to be unruly, so it was finally published separately. It's appearance closely coincided with the writer's death.
